It is used instead of a particular sort of HVAC system valve referred to as a thermostatic trap. This valves is used in draining the condensate water, usually produced from the cooling process in form of vapor. It keeps warm room air from entering the cold coils but, at the same time, permits condensate to flow out of the system.
